Earlier this month, The Scout Association elected its first female chair. Ann Limb, former civil servant and teacher, has pledged to (archive) “Get more girls around the campfire” and to “help young boys understand what it is to be a young woman” with a view of “changing boys behaviour”.
This appointment is a disaster for Scouting. To suggest that the Scouts has a problem with girls / lack of girls is ridiculous, but to then go on to say that boys need to be educated in the many victimhood fantasies of Feminists is madness. Never mind the fact that the Scout Association has successfully welcomed girls into Scouting for a number of years, all of whom enjoy Scouting for what it already is, whilst equivalent “Girlguiding UK” still remains exclusively girls only. Limb’s intention to turn Scouting into a vehicle that imbues young boys in feminist ideology will set a very noble organisation on the path to self-destruction.
So what does Ann Limb want to teach our young men about how awful it is to be a woman today? Currently, the male suicide rate is the highest since 2001. Young men are significantly less likely to go to University, and if they do they will doubtlessly be exposed to the petty, relentless campus Feminism that Ann Limb is trying to push. The NHS Budget for Women’s Health is 7x greater than Men’s Health. If they become homeless, a young woman will be guaranteed shelter whilst a man will not. There are countless ways women as a group are more privileged than men are in our gynocentric Western Society.
The last thing the youth of today need is even more male-bashing poison being prescribed to them. It’s everywhere already, particularly across education and the media. Even in the family, some parents take the feminist concept of “male privilege” so seriously that they save trust funds exclusively for their daughter and not their son. All of education and academia is essentially feminist, and men – particularly of the cis, white, heterosexual variety – are a common scapegoat for the first world struggles of privileged women. For boys growing up without a father or positive male role-model, the situation is particularly bleak given the lack of male teachers, particularly at primary level.
Of course, it is no accident that a Feminist infiltration of Scouting should happen now. At a time when the foundations of Institutions like the Scouts have become so eroded, they are feeling a pressure to completely redefine themselves. So hollowed out of tradition and focus have they become, that they turn to ideological opportunists like Limb to fill the void with their own politically correct, quasi-religious rhetoric. As Brendan O’Niell said in 2011, it is rare that our institutions have these new commandments forced upon them overnight by a mob of PC activists. People like Ann Limb fill in the void left behind by the gradual uprooting of tradition. The Scouts used to be about service to God, Queen and Country – or Religion, Monarchy and Nation. None of these traditions hold the authority and relevance they had when Scouting was founded, therefore the induction of a new kind of religious authority such as Feminism can become the organisation’s only moral and existential ambit.
I myself have been involved in Scouting since the age of 10. It is a valuable organisation that has a lot to offer its members and society, regardless of their gender. This is why it is so disheartening to see somebody like Ann Limb being put in a position to corrupt the positive impact it has on the lives of young people. The fact that she seeks to use her appointment to “change the behavior of young boys towards women” should make anybody of good conscience question their faith in her.
